Mireille Merckx, MD, Phd °April 14, 1955
Mireille Merckx is a specialist in gynecology, obstetrics, and andrology, and worked in a private practice setting as well as at the Saint-Pierre and Erasmus University Clinics of Brussels, Belgium, and in the Paola Children’s Hospital, Antwerp, Belgium. In october 2012 she became a staff member of the Ghent University Clinic. Her special destinations include clinical Obstetrics, Endoscopic surgery, PAG and Parenthood & Family Planning agencies. Since 2020 she is an academic counselor at the Ghent university and retired from her clinical hospital activity.
After specialising in Pediatrics and Adolescent gynecology at the Necker Institute in Paris, France, Dr. Merckx became Head of the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology at University Hospital Saint-Pierre. She worked as a consultant in vulvovaginal mucosal pathology in children at the clinic of the Erasmus University of Brussels. Nowadays she still works in continuing medical education and trains fellows, junior fellows, and other healthcare professionals in gynecology. Dr Merckx is an active member or GAMS (Group for the Abolition of Sexual Mutilation), she trains medics and paramedics in sexual mutilation pathology. Dr. Merckx is active in development of HPV and COVID vaccination programs in Belgium and works in a collaborative research program on HPV at the International Center for Reproductive Health at Ghent University, Belgium. She obtained her Phd degree in 2014 at Ghent University with the thesis “Human papillomavirus and related disease in underage children : implications for prevention”
Dr. Merckx was Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Flemish obstetrical and gynecological association and President of their scientific committee. She is president of the Belgian Association of Pediatric Gynecology. She was board member of the European society of contraception and reproductive health as well as a broad member of FIGIJ.
Dr. Merckx serves as a reviewer for Vaccine, the Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive health the European Journal of Cancer, the Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology.
She has been a member of the steering committee of the In-choice Contraception Study Group since 2009, of the expert group on Flexible Oral Contraceptive Regimens in 2011, of the cervical cancer screening at a population level and of the Vaccination Communication and Strategy committee of Belgium.
Since 2021 she is a board member of the European Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology.
